This scientific study documents a previously unstudied form of pollution. The Surfrider Foundation has quantified PFAS, persistent pollutants, in 107 French bathing sites. The study was made possible by citizen sampling campaigns conducted according to a well-defined protocol, and its results are unequivocal: they confirm that bathing waters are not spared from PFAS pollution, also known as the "21st-century health scandal."

The majority of the bathing sites analysed by the Surfrider Foundation Europe are contaminated by eternal pollutants, according to the NGO study published on Friday 3 July. Three quarters of the lakes and rivers, and close to one in two beaches exceed the threshold of "bad chemical status".
