Four-time cancer survivor finds power in community
Bernie and Sue Brown say the monthly group offers hope and peer support for patients, survivors and caregivers after institutional backing ended.
Upon moving to Park Rapids last November, four-time cancer survivor Bernie Brown and his wife, Sue Brown, launched a local support group for patients, survivors, and caregivers.
The Browns, who were active in Gilda's Club Minnesota, believe support groups are essential for survival; Sue Brown noted connecting with others helps lighten attitudes for those on the 'roller coaster' of treatment.
Bernie Brown's journey began in 2012 with Stage 3B esophageal cancer, requiring 33 targeted radiation treatments; he credits the drug Herceptin, a "breast cancer miracle drug," with saving his life.
Meetings are held at Senior Connections at 10:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of each month, though uptake has been slow, the Browns remain committed to encouraging participation.
Bernie Brown emphasizes lifestyle adjustments like eliminating alcohol and finding spiritual purpose in helping others, believing that thinking about fellow patients such as Judy aids the healing process.
