Austin ISD Selected for State Review of District Spending
The review will assess whether district spending follows state law and directs taxpayer funds to students, classrooms and teachers, the comptroller said.
On Monday, Texas Comptroller Don Huffines announced a "detailed review" of four school districts: Austin ISD, Barbers Hill ISD, El Paso ISD, and Prosper ISD, establishing the Huffines Performance Review.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott requested the investigation in August, citing $104.9 billion in K-12 education spending and tasking the Comptroller with ensuring taxpayer dollars reach students and classrooms rather than administrative bloat.
The selected districts vary in size, with Austin ISD reporting over 69,000 students, while El Paso ISD had 46,244, Prosper ISD had 33,583, and Barbers Hill ISD served about 8,088 students.
State Sen. Sarah Eckhardt, a Democratic opponent, criticized the move as "nothing more than the Acting Comptroller bolstering TEA's favored model of cuts, consolidations, layoffs and takeovers."
The final report is expected by Dec. 31, providing the 90th Legislature time to consider reforms. Huffines stated the review is an "important step to ensure transparency, accountability, and the responsible use of public funds.
