India Strengthens Fertiliser Security with Fresh Imports and Record Stocks
On Monday, four cargo vessels carrying urea, di-ammonium phosphate , and sulphur successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz and are en route to Indian ports, bolstering the country's fertilizer supply during the Kharif cropping season.
Days after India reported 16 fertilizer-laden ships stranded in the Strait carrying an estimated 700,000 tonnes of cargo, the successful transit provides relief amid rising uncertainty in global maritime trade routes.
The four vessels are expected to dock at the ports of Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, Paradeep, and Mundra, where cargo will be unloaded to strengthen fertilizer availability for farmers during the critical agricultural season.
India has tied up more than 90 lakh metric tonnes of fertilizer for the ongoing Kharif season, with total inventory reaching 196.08 lakh tonnes as of yesterday, ensuring comfortable availability for the agriculture sector.
Diplomatic coordination through 28 Indian missions abroad has diversified supply sources, securing critical nutrients from Russia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia to maintain stability against ongoing global trade route volatility.
