India's 'Cockroach' Movement Founder Arrested
Police said the arrest aimed to prevent a breach of the peace as protests over voter-list revisions and election chief Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation demand continued.
On Saturday, Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke was arrested following his detention on Friday ahead of a Delhi rally that drew hundreds of protesters.
Near-Daily protests erupted this month demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation over voter list revisions that deleted more than 130 million voters, which activists claim favor Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party .
Student activist Neha Bora was detained on Friday while attempting to reach Central Delhi with supporters but was released on Saturday. The movement poses a significant challenge to Modi and the BJP during the prime minister's 12 years in power.
Authorities placed Dipke under "preventive arrest" to maintain order, according to broadcasters India Today and NDTV. Officials have not yet scheduled a court date for the movement founder.
Earlier this year, a weeks-long sit-in by movement supporters forced Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation over exam paper leaks, demonstrating the movement's sustained political influence.
