Former Manitoba MP arrested following firearm trafficking investigation
RCMP say the cache included 439 firearms, an antique cannon and more than $300,000 in cash, and more charges are possible.
On Monday, Manitoba RCMP charged former MP Inky Mark, 78, with a dozen firearms-related offences after police seized 439 firearms, an antique cannon, and more than $300,000 in currency from his Dauphin-area home during a July 7 search.
The charges stem from a months-long investigation dating back to late March, when RCMP were notified that firearms charges had been laid in the United States against another Dauphin-area resident, 73-year-old Wilfred Kachurowski.
Police allege they found hundreds of improperly stored weapons, including three illegally trafficked firearms and one with a tampered serial number. Cpl. Barry Kirby said, "Generally speaking, these weapons are unregistered and can be difficult to trace."
Mark appeared in court last week and was released with conditions. Kirby noted that "it's expected to take several weeks" for investigators to process the evidence and determine further details.
A former mayor of Dauphin, Mark represented the riding as an MP from 1997 to 2010, serving with the Reform Party, Canadian Alliance, and Conservatives before running unsuccessfully in 2015.
