Former Malaysian leader Najib stays in prison after house arrest is put on hold
The attorney-general’s office said Najib must stay in prison while it reviews legal questions over the pardon and a court order after the RM50 million payment.
- On Friday, the United Malays National Organisation paid the RM50 million fine required for former Prime Minister Najib Razak's house arrest, fulfilling a key condition of his conditional pardon granted by King Sultan Ibrahim in September.
- King Sultan Ibrahim granted Najib a conditional pardon in September 2026 allowing him to serve his remaining six-year sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, provided he settled the RM50 million fine imposed in his SRC International case.
- Contradicting UMNO's announcement, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor stated on Friday she had no knowledge of the payment. "The family doesn't know, and I'm not being told about it," Najib's wife told reporters at the court complex.
- Directing a temporary hold on Najib's transfer, the Attorney General's Chambers cited legal ambiguity over how the pardon affects his separate 1MDB-related conviction. The AGC ordered he remain in Kajang Prison pending clarification.
- Najib's house arrest applies only to his six-year SRC International sentence, leaving his separate 15-year 1MDB conviction untouched. If his appeal fails, he could return to prison after August 23, 2028, when his current sentence expires.
