Former Jockey Levi Williams Jailed for Manslaughter of Pensioner He Punched Outside Pub
The court heard Williams delivered the fatal blow during a drunken confrontation and will serve 305 days already spent in custody toward his term.
On Thursday, former jockey Levi Williams, 27, was sentenced to three years in prison at Peterborough Crown Court after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of 71-year-old Richard Wingrove.
The incident occurred on March 8, 2025, outside the Waggon and Horses Pub in Newmarket, where an altercation escalated during a confrontation between Williams and the Wingroves.
Judge Sean Enright acknowledged Williams was "not the aggressor at the start," but noted he had consumed alcohol and tested positive for cocaine before striking the vulnerable pensioner who relied on a walking stick.
Detective Constable Hannah Barrett of Suffolk Police described the death as a "completely avoidable act of violence." Williams has already served 305 days in custody, which counts toward his three-year sentence.
Williams told probation, "If I could go back in time and change it, I would." Wingrove's daughter noted her father never met the great-grandchild he was expecting, underscoring the permanent loss.
