Ex-chief executive of HIV Scotland ordered to repay embezzled £5,000 to similar charity
The former charity chief admitted spending £5,000 on taxi journeys and Amazon purchases and was given 100 hours of unpaid work.
At Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday, Sheriff John Cook sentenced former HIV Scotland chief executive Nathan Sparling to 100 hours of unpaid work within 18 months and ordered £5000 compensation to Waverley Care.
Sparling admitted embezzling £5000 between April 2019 and March 2021 while employed as chief executive of HIV Scotland, spending the funds on taxi journeys and Amazon deliveries including groceries.
Addressing the 35-year-old, Sheriff Cook stated, "This is a breach of trust, as you were in a position of trust regarding the funding." Sparling accepted responsibility and intends to repay the money in full.
The Crown Office emphasized the seriousness of the offending, stating that "those who seek to exploit public funds for their own personal gain will be held fully to account for their crimes."
Because HIV Scotland no longer operates as a charity, the court directed compensation to Waverley Care, which Sheriff Cook noted "has similar objectives to the charity of which you were previously chief executive.
