Two Candidates Running for Green Party Leadership, Winner to Be Announced Nov. 14

On Wednesday, former Kitchener Centre MP Mike Morrice announced his candidacy for Green Party leadership, joining Ottawa's Nira Dookeran as one of two approved candidates.
Green Party Leader Elizabeth May announced in 2025 she would step down after leading the party since 2022, prompting the official launch of the five-month leadership race on June 11, 2026.
Dookeran brings a 12-year history with the party as an organizer and candidate; both candidates must sign up 200 new members and raise at least $15,000 by Sept. 30 to qualify.
Party members will cast ballots from Nov. 2 to Nov. 13 using a ranked ballot system, with the Green Party announcing the new leader on Nov. 14, 2026.
Despite losing his Kitchener Centre seat in April 2025 by 358 votes to Conservative Kelly DeRidder, Morrice has already been declared the Green candidate for the next federal election.
