Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith dies at 36
The former pass rusher recorded 52.5 sacks in six active seasons, and the 49ers said no cause of death was released.
Former NFL defensive lineman Aldon Smith died Saturday in the Bay Area at age 36. Smith arrived DOA at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California, though the cause of death remains unannounced.
Originally drafted seventh overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2011, Smith recorded 52.5 sacks and 228 tackles across 75 career games, earning All-Pro honors in 2012 with a franchise-record 19.5 sacks.
Smith's professional career faced interruptions from off-field issues involving 10 arrests in nine years, leading to multiple league suspensions before his final season with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020.
In 2024, Smith launched "I.M. Loading," a project using "Intelligent Movement" to provide mentorship and recovery coaching for young athletes. He hoped his journey would serve as a cautionary tale for those entering professional sports.
The 49ers organization said they are "devastated by the sudden and tragic passing," remembering Smith's "infectious smile" and dominance on the field while extending condolences to his family and all who knew him.
