Former Brewers Owner Bud Selig Reflects on Bringing Baseball Back to Milwaukee
The 92-year-old commissioner emeritus handed the ball to Robin Yount before Game 1 and said he hopes Milwaukee finally wins a title.
On Friday, former MLB commissioner Bud Selig participated in the first-pitch ceremony at American Family Field before Game 1 of the World Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Selig assembled a group that bid $10.8 million to purchase the Seattle Pilots in 1970, ordering the team's equipment truck to Milwaukee and renaming the franchise the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers lost the 1982 World Series to the Cardinals in Game 7, and the team did not return to the championship for 44 years until this current appearance.
Current owner Mark Attanasio, who purchased the team from the Selig family in 2005, frequently consults with the former commissioner about club operations and recent successes.
At 92, the Hall of Fame member serves as commissioner emeritus while teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and maintaining an office in a Milwaukee tower.
