Former Bosnian Serb leader Biljana Plavsic dies in Belgrade
The former Bosnian Serb leader was the only woman convicted by the U.N. tribunal and served 11 years for persecution.
On Thursday, Biljana Plavsic, a former senior wartime leader of the Bosnian Serbs, died in Belgrade at age 96, the Serb-led Republika Srpska broadcaster RTRS reported.
During the 1992-5 war, Plavsic served as vice-president of the Serb-led Republika Srpska and was later sentenced to 11 years in prison by the International Criminal Tribunal for persecuting Bosniaks, Croats, and non-Serbs.
Plavsic remains the only woman convicted of wartime crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia; she served two-thirds of her sentence in Sweden after her 2003 transfer.
Despite her guilty plea, Plavsic later told a Swedish magazine she had "done nothing wrong," claiming she only admitted guilt to have charges dropped.
Following her 2009 release from prison, Plavsic lived a reclusive life in Belgrade, remaining largely politically inactive while occasionally granting interviews to media.
This former professor of biology was the only woman convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia for war crimes and played a leading role in the massacres of the 1992-1995 war, before a reversal against her former allies.
