Forest Fire Burning Near Chernobyl Plant After Drone Crash, Kyiv Says
Authorities said radiation levels remained normal as firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which spread rapidly in dry, windy conditions.
On Friday, a large forest fire is burning through Chernobyl near Kyiv, covering about 1,100 hectares, Ukrainian authorities said.
The blaze began Thursday following a drone crash near Chernobyl, though authorities have not identified the drone's origin, and firefighters are working to contain the spread.
Rescuers face severe obstacles: dry weather, strong winds, and mine danger in certain areas complicate firefighting efforts, Ukraine's State Emergency Service said.
Radiation levels at the site remain within "normal limits," authorities reported, as the fire spreads in an area largely deserted since the 1986 disaster at Chernobyl.
Ukraine has repeatedly accused Moscow of attacking its nuclear sites, citing a Russian drone that punctured a radiation shell at Chernobyl last year.
Ukrainian authorities have reported this Friday that there has been a heavy fire near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine, following the impact of a drone in the framework of the Russian invasion, although they have confirmed that for the time being radiation levels are still "stable".
