Forensic teams search a suspected mass grave from the Kosovo war
Forensic teams are searching for war crimes victims and the fate of about 1,600 people still missing, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Kosovo authorities began excavations at a mass grave site near the village of Kalluder in Zubin Potok after forensic teams confirmed human remains of forensic significance were present.
- Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that officials suspect the remains could belong to 23 intellectuals abducted and forcibly disappeared from Mitrovica on April 19, 1999, during the war.
- Authorities arrested two Kosovo Serbs on Monday in connection with the Kalluder site on suspicion of war crimes, while forensic team member Ditor Haliti confirmed the remains were of human origin.
- Interior Minister Xhelal Svecla said Tuesday that Kosovo "will not rest" until the fate of the last missing person is determined, accusing Serbia of obstructing efforts to clarify disappearances.
- About 1,600 people remain unaccounted for since the conflict, which saw the Kosovo Liberation Army fight Serbia before NATO bombed the country for 78 days in 1999, forcing withdrawal.
