Spain Passes 3M Foreign Workers Milestone

SPAIN, JUN 16 – Foreign workers now represent 14% of contributors to Spain's Social Security, driven by labour shortages and reforms since 2022, the ministry reported.

  • On Monday, 16 June, Spain recorded a new milestone as foreign nationals contributing to its social security system exceeded three million for the first time, totaling 3,070,831 registered affiliates across the country.
  • This milestone followed steady growth driven by the 2022 labour reform and a decade-long increase of 84.6% in foreign workers, especially from non-EU countries at 118%.
  • Foreign workers represent approximately 14% of all affiliates, with enrolment increasing by 6.8% over the past year in key sectors such as transport , finance , and manufacturing .
  • Elma Saiz noted that "temporary employment falls to historic lows" for both nationals and foreigners, linking foreign affiliation to low temporary contracts around 11.3%.
  • Despite the record numbers aiding labour shortages in hospitality, agriculture, and elder care, Spain faces challenges with low wages and unstable jobs limiting broader economic benefits.
