Ford launches battery business as Tesla energy sales boom
EDF power solutions North America can procure up to 4 gigawatt hours of battery storage a year from Ford Energy starting in 2028.
Ford Energy, a new subsidiary of Ford, announced a five-year framework agreement with EDF power solutions North America to supply battery energy storage systems, with EDF procuring up to 4 gigawatt hours annually starting in 2028.
The BlueOval Battery Park facility in Glendale, Kentucky, will serve as the production site after Ford repurposed the plant for battery manufacturing rather than vehicle assembly. Ford aims to produce at least 20 gigawatt-hours of annual energy storage capacity by late 2027.
Featuring a rated capacity of 5.45 megawatt-hours, the standardized, 20-foot containerized DC Block system utilizes 512 Ah liquid-cooled lithium iron phosphate cells. Ford offers these units in 2-hour and 4-hour discharge configurations for utility-scale applications.
Filling a market gap created by "data centre growth, renewable energy integration, and grid resilience requirements," Ford Energy President Lisa Drake said the new business supports the automaker's goal to turn around its money-losing Model e division.
Securing the "supply visibility and product confidence" needed for the energy transition, Tristan Grimbert, CEO of EDF power solutions North America, said the partnership leverages Ford's industrial-scale manufacturing to support grid-scale projects across the United States.
