Salmon Arm Fire Chief Says Wildfire a Reminder to Be Responsible in the Backcountry
BC Wildfire Service crews and Salmon Arm firefighters put out a 0.3-hectare East Canoe Creek blaze after smoke was spotted at a Rapattack base.
- BC Wildfire Service and Salmon Arm Fire Department crews controlled a wildfire on Larch Hills Thursday morning after BC Wildfire Service personnel at the Rapattack base spotted the.3 hectare East Canoe Creek blaze Wednesday afternoon.
- Though the blaze was believed to be human-caused, Salmon Arm Fire Chief Carmen Guidos noted it serves as a reminder of persistent dry conditions. Even as summer ends, fire risk remains high.
- Responding teams accessed the area via the 110 Forest Service Road past the Canoe Mill. The BCWS crew attacked the fire while the Salmon Arm Fire Department used a truck from Hall to assist with water deliveries.
- The fire was listed as being held shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, and crews were off the mountain by around 8 p.m. BCWS personnel returned Thursday morning for mop-up operations.
- Guidos urged caution regarding campfires, noting that a ban remains in effect for everything except campfires. "Even though summer is essentially ending, it's still dry out there," Guidos said.
