For Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards, a new standard for excellence
Chris Finch says Edwards can shift more energy to defense as his offensive load drops, and Tim Connelly says he must excel on both ends.
The 2026-27 season kicks off Wednesday in Miami, with Timberwolves coach Chris Finch expecting Anthony Edwards to refocus on defensive responsibilities after prioritizing scoring last year.
Last year Edwards carried a heavy offensive load, causing his defensive metrics to plummet; the addition of LaMelo Ball reduces that burden and frees him to refocus on defense.
Wolves basketball boss Tim Connelly believes Edwards has "a chance" to be the best player in the world and "the ability to be, I think, the best on-ball perimeter defender in the NBA."
Edwards now evaluates his performance using plus-minus metrics rather than scoring output alone, grading "his game a lot different" as he aims to excel on both ends of the floor.
Turner, who played alongside Michael Jordan in Chicago, noted that elite two-way play requires immense effort, though Edwards pursues that rare standard as the season begins.
