Hungary confirms fifth foot-and-mouth outbreak as virus persists

Hungary and Slovakia are battling outbreaks of the highly contagious livestock disease.

The presence of the foot-and-mouth disease virus has also been confirmed at another location, at a livestock farm in Rábapordány, confirmed Minister of Agriculture István Nagy in a video posted on his social media page. He informed that following the reporting of the suspicious case, the Veterinary Authority immediately carried out the necessary sampling, and laboratory tests confirmed the infection this afternoon.

Foot and mouth disease is a highly contagious and dangerous viral disease for animals. In the event of an outbreak, all animals on farms must be culled.

Over 800 animals were killed and buried during the night from Thursday to Friday after another foot-and-mouth disease case. The groundwater in Austria should not be endangered.
