Once upon a time, at the dawn of civilization, some dark-skinned people beat their bongos and tam-tams, rhythmically and steadily, because it was a way to express something they carried within themselves, perhaps part of a ritual, perhaps a need to call for rain, to appease the Gods, or simply a way for the tribe to collectively, in a trance and in harmony with the cosmos, have fun.
