NIA Registers Case to Probe Flydubai Cockpit Attack on Capt Smit Machchhar

The agency is probing an alleged attempt to hijack or crash the aircraft after the captain was stabbed in the cockpit and 180 occupants landed safely.

  • The National Investigation Agency registered a case on Friday to probe the mid-air cockpit attack on Captain Smit Machchhar aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, filing an FIR under the Anti-Hijacking Act and Unlawful Activities Act.
  • During the September 30 flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, an Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar with an axe inside the cockpit, triggering a steep 16,000-foot descent before an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
  • UAE Attorney-General Counsellor Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi reported the 29-year-old suspect allegedly planned to crash the plane at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv to cause maximum casualties, with radicalization traced to 2017 while studying in Australia.
  • Despite sustaining severe injuries, Captain Machchhar unlatched the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew to restrain the attacker; he is now recovering in an Abu Dhabi hospital with Prime Minister Narendra Modi having reached out.
  • Officials described the incident as "apparently an attempt to hijack the flight or crash it," and the NIA investigation will probe the circumstances of the alleged assault, which has drawn international attention to the pilot's actions.
