Byron Donalds Picks Bryan Avila, Son of Cuban Exiles, as Running Mate in Florida Governor Race
Donalds tapped state Sen. Bryan Avila, a former Florida House leader and National Guard captain, to broaden the Republican ticket’s appeal.
On Tuesday, Republican gubernatorial nominee Congressman Byron Donalds announced Florida State Senator Bryan Avila as his running mate during a Miami press conference as part of his Defending the Florida Dream tour.
Before his 2022 Senate election, Avila served eight years in the Florida House of Representatives, rising to Speaker Pro Tempore, and currently serves as a captain in the Florida Army National Guard.
Currently chairing the Senate Finance and Tax Committee, Avila sponsored property tax relief measures exempting up to $250,000 of primary home values and the Stop WOKE Act, positioning the ticket to prioritize lowering costs for families.
Democratic nominee David Jolly congratulated the selection but argued the race centers on Donalds' close political alliance with President Donald Trump rather than on the running mate choice in the November general election.
The selection gives Donalds deep political ties to Miami-Dade and the influential Cuban-American community, strengthening outreach to Hispanic voters as the campaign builds momentum toward November.
