Florida Attorney General Proposes Bill Cracking Down on Scam Calls

On Thursday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier proposed the Florida Anti-Spam Communications Act to grant the Office independent authority to investigate and shut down phone and text scams, including AI-generated impersonation schemes.
Current Florida law lacks sufficient penalties for high-volume fraud operations and phone farms, Uthmeier said, as scammers frequently impersonate government officials or companies using Artificial voices to make fraudulent requests sound authentic.
The proposed bill would classify impersonation and SIM farm possession as felonies with mandatory prison time for high-loss cases, while requiring communications providers to authenticate caller IDs and honor STOP requests within days.
Statewide Prosecutor Taylor Chatting noted that The Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit recovered nearly $10 million for victims this year, while the proposal would empower the Department and Legal Affairs to seek injunctions and civil penalties.
Uthmeier expects an AI-generated legislative package this year as the proposal awaits filing, and residents should report suspected scams at MyFloridaLegal or 1-866-9NO-SCAM to aid ongoing prosecutions.
