Nepal Hit by Fresh Flood Disaster Weeks After Deadly Flooding
On Sunday, October 11, 2026, flash floods along the Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha District, Nepal, left at least 10 people unaccounted for. The torrent, triggered by a landslide blocking a tributary, destroyed dozens of homes and critical infrastructure.
A large landslide blocked a tributary, releasing floodwaters that swept through settlements in Painyu and Bagar, destroying nearly 35 houses. This disaster complicates Nepal's recovery from August floods that killed more than 1,400 people and caused $4.7bn in damage.
The floodwaters destroyed six bridges, including two motorable and four suspension crossings, while damaging settlements in Jagat, Salleri, Dovan, and Ghattekhola. Nepali Army search-and-rescue teams successfully airlifted six individuals from high-risk areas.
Home Minister Sudan Gurung issued urgent evacuation orders for residents along the Budhi Gandaki River in Sirdibas, Khorlabesi, and Arughat. He directed those needing emergency assistance to contact the Ministry of Home Affairs on 1234.
Authorities have extended evacuation warnings downstream toward Chitwan and Nawalparasi districts as the river's water level remains volatile. A Joint Rapid Response Team from Kathmandu has been deployed to assist local security personnel with ongoing operations.
