Mysterious Island Appears and Disappears in British Columbia Reservoir
A forested floating island about the size of two football fields appeared on July 21 in the Williston Reservoir, northern British Columbia, as confirmed by satellite images and B.C. Hydro officials.
B.C. Hydro attributed the island's emergence to record-high water levels lifting vegetation and driftwood, which was then pushed into open water by winds.
Local resident Rocky Avery described the sighting as unique in 40 years and shared images that gained widespread attention.
By August 5, the island had disappeared from satellite tracking, with officials speculating it may have drifted back to shore or to a sheltered area rather than sinking, and monitoring continued in case it reappeared.
