Emergency Declared in Madrid as Wildfires Sweep Europe
The interior ministry placed the response under a military emergency unit as more than 10,000 people were evacuated.
- On Thursday, Spain declared a national emergency in Madrid and the province of Avila, placing wildfire response under a military emergency unit to accelerate resource deployment.
- The largest blaze in Guadalajara, about 100km north of Madrid, has devastated 32,000ha since July 16, triggering simultaneous evacuations of more than 10,000 people across the region.
- Spanish authorities ordered 3,500 residents in Aldea de Fresno to evacuate yesterday, while residents in Burgohondo, El Tiemblo, and Navaluenga were ordered to stay indoors as flames advanced.
- Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the government deployed "every available resource" to stop fires in Avila, Leon, Toledo, and Madrid, urging the public to exercise "great caution."
- According to the European Forest Fire Information System , 125,000 hectares have burned in Spain this year, while wildfires in Sicily and France claimed an Italian firefighter.
