Tragedy on the Border: Kenyan Officers Fall in Al Shabaab Clash
On Tuesday, five Kenyan security officers—including four members of the elite Special Operations Group and one National Police Reservist —were killed in Mandera County after their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device .
A patrol team from SOG Alungu encountered militants near Wantey Dam around noon following intelligence reports that had prompted increased security patrols in the area.
Investigators believe the roadside bomb was planted days prior, triggering a gun battle after the blast; attackers subsequently escaped toward the Kenya-Somalia border.
While no group has claimed responsibility, authorities suspect the involvement of al-Shabaab, the Somalia-based militant group known for cross-border attacks in the region.
Security forces launched a manhunt for the suspects; a reinforcement team was later struck by an IED in the same area, resulting in no additional casualties.
