Five fishermen used two dinghies to reach the calf after it drifted nearly 4 kilometres downstream, officials said.
- On Monday, five North Bengal Fishermen rescued a two-week-old elephant calf from the Teesta river near Gajaldoba after it was swept four kilometres downstream by the strong current.
- Around 8.30 a.m. on Friday, an elephant herd attempted to cross the Teesta near the Gajaldoba barrage when the calf separated from its mother, as eyewitness Rajkumar Roy observed.
- Divisional Forest Officer Mudit Kumar confirmed fishermen pursued the calf in a small row boat for nearly four kilometres, finally securing the drowning animal for immediate veterinary examination.
- Forest Department officials minimized human contact to prevent the calf's rejection by its mother; the mother subsequently approached the riverbank, accepted the calf, and moved with it toward the forest.
- Located within the Baikanthapur forest division, known for its significant Asian elephant population, the rescue demonstrates the region's conservation challenges and the coordination required between local fishermen and forest authorities.
