First women's downhill training cancelled as heavy snow falls on Cortina
Milan Cortina Games organizers announced on Wednesday they canceled the opening women's downhill training scheduled for Thursday at Olympia delle Tofane due to ongoing snowfall.
After heavy snow this week, some 7 inches fell on the Olympia delle Tofane course and forecasts predict continued snowfall into Thursday in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Citing forecasts, organisers told teams they will focus all efforts on Friday morning training, with two other runs scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
Affected athletes face altered preparation, including Vonn needing to wait another day to test her left knee after rupturing her ACL last Friday, with Knight saying 'But we also need to get out of the start gate on one training run in case something happens further along the line and they have to cancel something else'.
Organisers say they will focus on preparing the Olimpia delle Tofane piste to meet the Friday morning training goal, as Olympic rules require at least one session.
Organizers have canceled the first women's downhill training session at the Winter Olympics scheduled for Thursday due to forecasted snowfall, the French news agency AFP reports. For the sole Slovenian representative, Ilko Štuhec, the next opportunity to test the slopes in Cortina d'Ampezzo will be on the Friday before the opening ceremony of the Games.
