First woman to appear in NHL game continues to build legacy as a PWHL general manager
Rhéaume’s hiring comes as Detroit joins the league’s expansion to 12 teams, with several players she developed eligible for the June 17 draft.
On Wednesday, Manon Rhéaume was named the first general manager of the Professional Women's Hockey League Detroit expansion team, marking a full-circle moment for the veteran who has worked in Michigan hockey for over 20 years.
Rhéaume previously served as girls' division director of the Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club in Detroit for 11 years and spent four years as a hockey operations and development advisor for the Los Angeles Kings before the PWHL appointment.
Historically, the 54-year-old holds a unique distinction as the first and only woman to play in an NHL game, having appeared in pre-season matches for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992 and 1993.
"When this opportunity came about in Detroit, it's almost like everything I did in my entire life led to this," Rhéaume said, crediting hockey with providing lifelong opportunities and expressing excitement about her new role.
The PWHL will expand to 12 teams in 2026-27 with the addition of Detroit, Las Vegas, Hamilton, and San Jose, while players Rhéaume previously helped develop are eligible for the league draft on June 17.
