First migrants reach UK in two weeks after crossing Channel
About 74 migrants made the first Channel crossing in two weeks, bringing February's total to 597 amid improved weather conditions, Home Office data shows.
- On Tuesday the Home Office recorded 74 migrants arriving in the UK after crossing the English Channel, marking the first crossing in two weeks since February 9 when 322 people made the journey.
- A break in poor weather allowed several small boats to be launched for crossing attempts, while an independent inquiry earlier this month said small boat crossings `must end` to prevent further deaths.
- The inquiry, chaired by Sir Ross Cranston, reported that the 23/24 November 2021 capsizing left two survivors found nearly 12 hours after the first mayday and identified 27 dead and four missing.
- So far this month 597 migrants have crossed the Channel, and Border Force handled arrivals at Ramsgate, where people in lifejackets and coats disembarked on Wednesday.
- Politically, the arrivals prompted proposals as the Reform party said it would set up a unit to `track down, detain and deport` up to 288,000 people each year, with Zia Yusuf calling the UK `invaded`.
