'A Wonderful Result': First Edition of The Hobbit Sold for $97,000
BRISTOL, ENGLAND, AUG 7 – The first edition, one of only 1,500 printed in 1937, sold for over four times its estimated value due to global bidding interest, auction house Auctioneum said.
- During a house clearance in a Bristol residence, Auctioneum came across an original 1937 copy of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, one of only about 1,500 printed and considered highly valuable.
- The book originated from the personal collection of Hubert Priestley, a botanist associated with Oxford, who likely had a connection to Tolkien through their shared correspondence with C.S. Lewis.
- This edition, one of 1,500 first prints from September 1937, is covered in pale green fabric and includes uncommon black-and-white artwork created by Tolkien himself.
- Auctioneum specialist Caitlin Riley said, "Nobody knew it was there," and called it an "unimaginably rare find" as bidders worldwide drove the price over four times expectations.
- The Hobbit sold at auction for £43,000 to a private UK collector, highlighting continued strong interest in rare early Tolkien editions.
