Firefighters in Central Spain Battle Huge Wildfire During Heat Wave

Firefighters and troops are battling the blaze as 1,200 people were evacuated and five villages were cleared for residents to return, officials said.

  • A massive wildfire in Guadalajara province, located about 100 kilometers northeast of Madrid, has scorched at least 30,000 hectares since last Thursday and is Spain's most destructive blaze this year.
  • Persistent heat and severe drought conditions have fueled the blaze across Castilla-La Mancha's dry scrubland, as Spain entered its third heatwave of the summer with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius.
  • More than 600 firefighters and 29 aircraft are currently working to contain the blaze, which forced about 1,200 people to evacuate their homes across 34 hamlets in the region.
  • Castilla-La Mancha regional president Emiliano Garcia-Page said crews have "practically stopped" the fire from spreading toward Soria, while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro visited the fire-ravaged area on Wednesday.
  • Spain has already suffered 22 major forest fires this year, as scientists warn human-driven climate change is increasing the frequency of intense heatwaves and exacerbating future risks.
