Animals killed after devastating fire at jungle-themed soft play centre
Ten fire engines battled the blaze, and firefighters said the cause is under investigation after all animals inside died.
On Wednesday morning, 10 fire engines responded to a large blaze at The Jungle Box in Buntingford, destroying the indoor soft play centre on the Watermill Industrial Estate.
Opened in the spring of 2025, the facility served families as a jungle-themed soft play centre featuring a mini zoo, pets' corner, sensory room, and specialized sessions for children with additional needs.
Sadly, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed all animals inside died, including meerkats, owls, iguanas, giant tortoises, and a 16ft snake; no people were on site and no injuries occurred.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Darren Cook thanked crews for their "professionalism and hard work" in containing the blaze, as police closed Aspenden Road and London Road to manage heavy smoke.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, with two fire engines and an aerial ladder platform remaining on site Wednesday to dampen down hotspots and ensure safety.
