The Maryland State Fire Marshal is investigating a fire in a cell at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Westover that occurred on Monday afternoon just after 1:30. Officials say the fire occurred while the cell was unoccupied and originated in a cardboard box containing clothes and paperwork – investigators say the sprinkler system did activate. The fire has rendered the cell unusable until repairs can be made. Damage is estimated at $1000.
