Finland says Helsinki drone threat has ended, reopens airport
Authorities said the alert was a precaution after suspected drones prompted fighter jet scrambles and a three-hour airport closure, with no direct military threat found.
On Friday, Finnish authorities lifted a danger alert for the Uusimaa region after suspending air traffic at Helsinki Airport for three hours due to suspected drone activity. Interior Minister Mari Rantanen confirmed the situation returned to normal, though disruptions caused delays throughout the day.
Finland and the Baltic States have recently experienced Ukrainian drones targeting Russia stray into their airspace. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo noted these violations occur as Kyiv intensifies strikes on Russian oil export infrastructure, including ports at Primorsk and Ust-Luga on the Baltic Sea.
Europe remains on high alert after drone flyovers reached unprecedented levels last September, prompting leaders to develop a "drone wall" along their borders to better detect and intercept violations.
