Rugby-Moana Pasifika Will Not Compete in 2027 Super Rugby Pacific Season, NZ Rugby Says
NZR said no bidder met the capital and business-plan requirements, leaving the competition to shift to a 10-team format.
On Monday, New Zealand Rugby confirmed Moana Pasifika will not compete in the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season, rejecting all bids to transfer the franchise's licence to any new party.
The club entered liquidation in May after Pasifika Medical Association withdrew funding, leaving $8.2 million in debt. NZR required more than $10 million in commercial revenue and at least $15 million in committed capital for viability.
Multiple parties, including the Samoan and Tongan governments and Kanaloa Consortium, sought to rescue the franchise. None of the interested parties "were able to satisfy both the capital and business plan requirements necessary to secure the licence."
New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters expressed disappointment at the compressed timeline, while Prime Minister Christopher Luxon dismissed government support, citing a prior $3 million Sport New Zealand loan as evidence against further investment.
Super Rugby Pacific will proceed as a 10-team competition in 2027, though NZR chief financial officer Chris Kinraid said the organization remains "open and willing" to engage with future Pacific-based teams demonstrating long-term viability.
