Fighting fraud is a top Trump administration priority. Here’s what you should know
CMS also imposed a six-month freeze on new Medicare hospice and home care enrollments while intensifying fraud investigations nationwide.
- On Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz announced a $1.3 billion Medicaid deferral for California and $350 million for Minnesota, plus a six-month moratorium on new Medicare hospice enrollments.
- These actions expand the Trump administration's monthslong anti-fraud campaign, which recently suspended payments to hundreds of Los Angeles hospice agencies and issued a six-month moratorium on durable medical equipment suppliers.
- Oz called the action the "largest deferral we've ever made," while Vance stated, "We want to protect Medicare." However, Gov. Gavin Newsom's office disputed the claims, arguing the state keeps people out of expensive nursing homes.
- The Department of Health and Human Services warned state attorneys general to aggressively investigate Medicaid fraud or risk losing federal support totaling nearly $500 million. The agency will review Medicaid Fraud Control Units for compliance.
- Vance is highlighting these efforts Thursday in Maine, where GOP Sen. Susan Collins faces a competitive race. The Government Accountability Office estimated annual fraud losses between $233 billion and $521 billion.
