Longtime London MP Irene Mathyssen Dies at Age 75
Family and colleagues say Mathyssen, a former provincial and federal MP, died after a battle with cancer and left a long political legacy.
On Monday, longtime NDP politician Irene Mathyssen died at age 75 following a battle with cancer, ending a career serving the London, Ont., region.
Mathyssen began her political career in 1990 as an MPP for Middlesex, later serving as Ontario's tourism minister before shifting to federal politics in 2006 to represent London-Fanshawe.
During her time as an MP, Mathyssen spearheaded a successful campaign to remove the federal sales tax from menstrual products, drawing on her background as an elementary school teacher.
Friend Nadine Abi Raad remembered Mathyssen as a champion for the vulnerable, stating, "She was a voice for those who didn't have a voice."
Mathyssen is survived by her husband, Keith, and her daughter, Lindsay Mathyssen, who succeeded her representing London-Fanshawe from 2019 until 2025.
