Fetterman asks for heightened security for NFL draft in Pittsburgh
He says a higher SEAR level would add counter-drone support, K-9 units and intelligence sharing for an expected 700,000 fans and 50 million viewers.
On Friday, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman urged the Department of Homeland Security to elevate the 2026 NFL Draft security designation in Pittsburgh from Level 3 to Level 2.
Fetterman cited a 'changing threat environment' amid the war in Iran as justification for requesting enhanced federal coordination and support at the massive public gathering.
The three-day event beginning April 23 expects over 700,000 fans in Pittsburgh, with more than 50 million viewers projected to watch on television or online.
A Level 2 designation would provide counter-drone support, K9 units, and intelligence analysis; DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin has not yet responded as of Friday night.
Pittsburgh last hosted the NFL Draft in 1948, making the 2026 event historically significant as federal officials monitor security risks at major public gatherings nationwide.
