Feds will unveil proposed changes to EV sales mandate this winter, officials say
Canada plans to revise its EV sales mandate after concerns over feasibility and tariffs; EVs accounted for 8.77% of new vehicle sales in August, officials said.
- On Nov. 3, 2025, Ottawa said it will unveil proposed changes to the electric-vehicle sales mandate this winter, federal officials said.
- After launching a 60-day review, officials noted Prime Minister Mark Carney paused the mandate rollout amid automakers' concerns and EVs made up 8.77 per cent of new sales in August, Statistics Canada reported.
- Officials flagged potential tweaks to the credit system, which currently allows manufacturers to earn one credit per $20,000 invested in charging infrastructure, capped at 10 per cent.
- The Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association warned automakers could face billions in credit costs if sales don't increase, noting EV sales hit 18 per cent last year with consumer rebates of up to $5,000 but plunged after they ended.
- The review will consider amendments to sales targets, including the 2035 standard, and officials said the department hopes to publish results before the end of this year and finalize amendments in late 2026.
