NHTSA Scolds Autonomous Developers
NHTSA says repeated failures by robotaxi systems are delaying emergency crews and creating safety risks, and it will meet with companies by the end of July.
This week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration demanded robotaxi operators fix a "disturbing trend" of vehicles interfering with first responders; Administrator Jonathan Morrison called the recurring pattern "unacceptable."
The agency documented multiple instances of AVs driving into active emergency scenes, blocking paths of ambulances and firefighters while failing to "recognize and respond to basic safety conditions like flashing lights, flares, smoke, fire, and traffic cones."
San Francisco Fire Department chief Patrick Rabbitt reported Waymo vehicles frequently blocking fire stations, while Austin officials described a Waymo blocking an ambulance for two full minutes during a mass shooting response.
NHTSA plans to convene with developers by the end of July to discuss solutions, as Morrison warned the agency will "exercise enforcement authority" if companies fail to address these safety concerns.
With Tesla preparing to roll out robotaxis this year, Morrison emphasized that while technology could improve mobility for Americans, "Public trust on our roads is earned, not given," and safety must remain the priority.
