- The child ran across the street from behind a double-parked SUV toward the school, with the collision occurring within two blocks during drop-off hours amid other children and a crossing guard.
- Waymo's 5th Generation Automated Driving System detected the child as they emerged, braked hard, and called 911 while the vehicle remained until law enforcement cleared the scene.
- NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigations will assess whether Waymo exercised appropriate caution near the school and will analyze its intended behavior in school zones, including post-impact response, while the NTSB also investigates.
- Waymo recalled more than 3,000 vehicles in December to update software tied to school-bus behavior, NHTSA opened probes, and the United States Senate Commerce Committee will hear Mauricio Pena on February 4.
