Jaremy Smith faces federal death penalty for kidnapping and killing paramedic Phonesia Machado-Fore, charged with multiple counts including carjacking and firearm use.
- On Feb. 26, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of South Carolina filed notice to seek the death penalty against Jaremy Alexander Smith, 35, and scheduled his arraignment in Florence federal court at 2:30 p.m.
- On March 13, 2024, prosecutors say Smith entered Phonesia Machado-Fore's Marion home, kidnapped her, and killed her near Nichols; her body was found two days later in Dillon County.
- He pleaded guilty to killing New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare on March 15, 2024, and was sentenced to life in prison in April 2025 for that killing.
- U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi authorized the District of South Carolina to pursue capital punishment; the indictment lists kidnapping resulting in death, carjacking resulting in death, and firearm offenses tied to Florence County paramedic Phonesia Machado-Fore's death.
