Australian MP attacked outside her office, says PM
Police arrested a 43-year-old suspect and seized a knife as they investigate whether the attack on Helen Haines was intentional.
On Monday, Independent Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines was struck by a vehicle outside her Wangaratta office and is in critical condition, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said. Haines was unloading her car when struck by the Toyota Landcruiser.
Victoria Police arrested a 43-year-old Tarrawingee man at the scene; officers seized a knife from inside the vehicle. The Major Collison Investigation Unit is examining whether the act was intentional.
Albanese confirmed the Joint Counter-Terrorism Team has been activated alongside investigations by the Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police. He said it is "too early" to determine a motive for the incident.
"All of our thoughts are with Helen, her family, her friends, her team, and her community at this extremely difficult time," Albanese told journalists. Reports of harassing behavior toward high-office holders have risen to 1067.
Haines, 65, has served as the Independent Federal Member for Indi since 2019 and was re-elected in 2022 and 2025. Before entering parliament, she worked as a nurse, midwife, and health researcher in Victoria.
