Federal authorities allege more than $10M in childcare payment fraud in California
Prosecutors say the operators ran sham daycares and used false attendance records to collect more than $10 million in subsidies, with some children never present.
- Federal authorities charged 12 defendants on Tuesday for fraudulently collecting more than $10 million in government childcare payments through fake facilities in San Diego County.
- Some defendants submitted claims while outside the country; Turkiya Alawad, 63, allegedly collected payments between Jan. 1, 2024, and Jan. 30, 2024, while abroad, prosecutors say.
- This California case exceeds the Feeding Our Future fraud, which submitted roughly $4.6 million in claims; unlike that Minnesota investigation focused on meal subsidies, this centers on childcare payments.
- The Trump administration has emphasized investigating fraud, with Vice President JD Vance chairing a task force; the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigations Division led this probe.
- Other defendants collected more than $1 million individually; Turkiya Alawad allegedly received more than $300,000 in 2025, while Aimee Bock, the Feeding Our Future leader, received a 41-year sentence in May.
