Fears for missing golden eagle as data from tag ‘suggests he has come to harm’
Tarras’s satellite tag showed suspicious data, raising concerns he may have been harmed; his mate Wren is also missing but no harm is confirmed, police said.
- Between August 27 and August 29, Police Scotland launched a major search for Tarras, a four-year-old male golden eagle missing north of Langholm, Dumfries and Galloway.
- The South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project relocated Tarras in 2021 and has translocated over 40 golden eagles, raising southern numbers to around 50 after seven years.
- Satellite-Tag data showed suspicious patterns and stopped transmitting, and a full search using specialist resources including dogs trained in tracing birds and their tags failed to find Tarras or the satellite tag.
- Officers say Tarras's mate Wren is also missing and urged anyone with information to call 101, quoting reference number 1987 of Friday, September 26, 2025, or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
- Amid a pattern of disappearances, authorities are investigating recent cases including Thistle and Sparky, while police say the ongoing investigation works with partner agencies to clarify details.
