Getting Too Many Political Texts and Calls? Here's How to Opt Out
RoboKiller estimates more than 60 billion political text messages from 2020 through 2024 as campaigns use AI to target voters cheaply.
Unsolicited political messages are targeting Ohio voters during this midterm election, with cumulative estimates reaching more than 60 billion texts as campaigns increasingly use text messaging to reach constituents.
Tech expert Giulia Porter explained voter files are public record, allowing campaigns to access phone numbers easily. "When you register to vote, your voter file is public record," Porter said.
Political messages remain exempt from the National Not Call Registry, meaning registration does not prevent campaigns from contacting voters. This loophole explains why the practice has become increasingly common during election cycles.
Porter suggests replying "STOP" to legitimate senders to reduce unwanted contact. Users can also filter unknown senders in Messages, while Android users can enable "Filter Spam Calls" via Settings-Caller.
Casting a ballot early may reduce the number of messages received as campaigns stop targeting those who have already voted, though it will be a long three weeks for Ohio voters this year.
