FBI surge leads to charges in 2020 killing in Native American community
Operation Not Forgotten led to charges against three suspects in the 2020 killing of a Navajo man, amid an FBI effort that resulted in 1,123 arrests in Indian Country this year.
- This year federal prosecutors charged Austin Begay, 31, with first-degree murder, Jaymes Fage, 38, with aiding and abetting, and Joshua Watkins, 40, with lying to investigators.
- Over six months FBI teams investigated unsolved violent crimes in Indian Country to address a crisis of disappearances and killings, while Kash Patel, FBI Director, acknowledged Monday that large jurisdictions suffer from resource shortages.
- Shorty was last seen at the Journey Inn Motel in Farmington, New Mexico, and was found days later in a field near the Navajo community of Nenahnezad; his mother displays his artwork, including an inked treble clef.
- Her five-year campaign ended this year when the U.S. Department of Justice announced results, and Vangie Randall-Shorty, mother and advocate, plans to continue advocating for Shorty.
- Operation Not Forgotten has produced 1,123 arrests, recovered over 300 weapons, and officials say the FBI’s Indian Country program had about 4,300 open investigations this year.
